 1st XI miss promotion by two points                  

Maximum points from the final match of the 2009 season away at Walton-le-Dale failed to snatch promotion for the 1st XI as Fylde II also scored an emphatic win at Whittle-le-Woods to clinch second place. Fylde II did the double over us and the game at Moorland Road also saw skipper Simon James pick up a hand injury that kept him out for over half of the season. Successive defeats at the start of July, against Harris Park and Penwortham II, proved costly and we were playing catch up after those set backs. It was, however, a successful season with 15 matches being won and a number of starring individual performances. Tim Phillips took 53 wickets and also scored over 500 runs to join an elite band of Wrea Green players to have achieved the 'double' in a league season. Ben James was our top batsman, scoring almost 600 runs whilst youngster Danny Gilbert burst onto the scene by taking 3-7 on his debut. John Lyon became the first 1st XI batsman to score a Palace Shield century since 2006 when he reached three figures against Walton-le-Dale.
